President's Corner
A word from VAS President - Dan Foutz

To all our supporters, athletes, coaches, sponsors, and volunteers,

Last month, we held our annual Big “O” Golf Tournament at Hanging Rock Golf Club. The tournament is in honor of Owen Grogan, who left this earth way too soon in 2014. Owen was a past employee of Virginia Amateur Sports and a longtime sports official in the area and at the collegiate level. A portion of the proceeds will go to Area 8 Special Olympics in Owen’s honor. Nineteen foursomes enjoyed a perfect weather day with lots of laughter and a few great rounds of golf.

We continue to prepare for the Star City Half Marathon, 10K and Kid’s Fun Run on November 22nd at Rivers Edge North on Reserve Ave. Registrations for the event have been up over the past years, and we are looking forward to having record attendance. Use this great weather to train and join us for a great pre-holiday event.

Please take time to read our October “Spotlight Coach.” Coach Pat Bateman with Fleet Feet Roanoke has been coaching endurance athletes for decades. Check out the training programs at Fleet Feet and find the right level for you. Lace up your running shoes and start running.

Please keep in mind that Virginia Amateur Sports is a 501(c)(3) organization. Please consider donating to our organization to support our efforts in promoting the values of health and wellness through competitions, education, and training for all Virginians. Click here to donate now.

If you are interested in sponsoring a youth team. Please contact me for more information at dfoutz@commonwealthgames.org. Thank you for your consideration.

As always, we appreciate your support and participation. Continue to train, practice, and prepare, and I look forward to seeing you all out there!

Best to all!

Dan Foutz
