March 2025
President's Corner
A word from VAS President - Dan Foutz
To all our supporters, athletes, coaches, sponsors, and volunteers,
Springtime is upon us and the Spring Equinox occurs on March 20th to make it official. Enjoy the warmer weather and get outside when possible. We are busy planning for our upcoming events. Registrations are trending up for our Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon on May 3rd at the Smith Mountain Lake State Park. This is a great race to consider a relay. Build a team as a family, with co-workers and with friends. Aqua Bike is also an available option. I hope to see you there!
Virginia Amateur Sports has added a couple of board members. Please join me in welcoming Judson “Jud” Foster, SVP, Regional Commercial Executive with Carter Bank & Trust and Fredrick “Fred” Schutt of Counsel with Woods Rodgers. We look forward to working with both Jud and Fred in guiding our 35-year organization into the future.
This month’s “Spotlight Athlete” is Lee Corning. Lee hails from Lunenburg, VA and came to the 2024 Virginia Commonwealth Games to compete in the shot-put at our track and field event. Due to multiple injuries and surgeries he headed for the 2024 games and he knew it would be his last competition. Please read his inspiring story and wish him luck in retirement.
As always, we appreciate your support and participation. Continue to train, practice, and prepare and I look forward to seeing you all out there!
Best to all!
Dan Foutz
First Medals of 2025 were awarded last weekend! We kicked off the Games with Able Wheelchair Basketball. Congratulations to all the athletes - it was a great day!

A Golden Time Competing at the Commonwealth Games
One of his biggest influences was Charles Alcorn, a longtime track and field coach who had been throwing for decades. The two became fast friends, bonding overweight training and shared experiences. Charles, despite having both hips replaced, remained a champion in his own right. (Read More)
