President's Corner

A word from VAS President - Dan Foutz

To all our supporters, athletes, coaches, sponsors, and volunteers,

I hope you all are enjoying the cool nights and mornings as an indication that autumn is on the way. Fingers crossed for great weather for our annual memorial golf tournament on September 19th at Hanging Rock Golf Club. We will honor the life of Owen Grogan and former VAS employee and sports official. We have just a couple of foursomes left, so click here, to register your team and join the fun!

We have added competitive darts to the Games. This event will take place November 16th and 17th at the Lynchburg Armory. Cash prizes will be offered by our partners at Blue Ridge Darts, register here and bring on your darts game.

We have started organizing the Star City Half Marathon, 10K, and Kid’s Fun Run. This will take place on November 23rd at Rivers Edge North. We are seeing the registrations trending upward. The post-race party is a crowd-pleaser with music, hot food, and cold beverages. This race is the final leg of the Blue Ridge Triple Crown. Register and start your training for one of the oldest running events in the area.

In this newsletter we are spotlighting Jeff Reynolds. Jeff is involved in Campbell County with special needs sports. As our Able Games grow, Jeff coordinates our Able Fishing contest. His passion for helping our special needs community is amazing and his talents assist us by offering activities for all Virginians.

As always, we appreciate your support and participation. Continue to train, practice, and prepare and I look forward to seeing you all out there!

Best wishes!
Dan Foutz

Able Fishing Coordinator Dedicated To Providing Activity Opportunities

The thrill of reeling in a fish is a rush that has made anglers out of countless people over the years. For the second year, the Able Games, put on as part of the Commonwealth Games, has had a fishing tournament open only to those who have a physical or mental disability.

Of course, medals are given out – gold and silver in the categories of biggest fish and most fish caught. Everyone gets a bronze.

On July 18, a group of 32 people, ages 5 through 75, caught fish from the pond owned by the Lyn-Dan Heights Ruritan Club in Campbell County. Moore’s Electric Co. of Altavista sponsored the event, supplying employees and family members to volunteer and participate in the festivities. Virginia Amateur Sports supplied snacks, drinks, and the most necessary items of all the worms.

Jeff Reynolds of Rustburg is the event coordinator. He has been running sporting events for special needs individuals for eight years, having been involved for 18 years. He coordinates t-ball, basketball, and fishing. Basketball, played in the winter in the gym at West Branch Elementary School in Campbell County, often it turns into whiffle ball or kickball for a change of pace.  (Read More)
